The Lamanai Pyramids date back to the 6th century A.D. and was found to have been built over a finely preserved temple from 5 centuries earlier.

First settled 3000 years ago, what makes this temple so unique is that it survived the cataclysm that devastated the other Maya cities.
The most famous feature of the Lamanai pyramid is a 13 feet high limestone face carved into its side, now protected from the elements by a makeshift roof.
The face; with its thick lips, bared teeth, dreamy eyes and elongated forehead make this image half horrifying and half serene.
